A great place to start is pick a couple of the covers and find the original artist's version. Sing Me Back Home really turned me on to Merle. It's fun and non-fattening!!

As to the flaming about only listening to the Dead...
Lighten up Francis. He was only being honest.

Agreed - listening to the original artists is a good thing to do. But if you're only listening to the Dead - you won't be, will you?

yeah I scooped out Sammy (hope I'm gettin this one right!) after I heard Harder They Come - but after I heard it did I ever pop in Sammy's and not Jer's - I don't think so.

Absolutely. It's very rare that I don't prefer the GD/JG versions, with the obvious exceptions being most of the 90's covers among others. Alot of the JGB covers are interesting in thier own right especially the traditionals.

Well, I recommend any head listen to the artists who influenced Jerry. The 'Harder They Come' soundtrack is a great place to start. Jimmy Cliff, the reggae soul w/ a voice like Marvin Gaye. Desmond Dekker, also a great singer.

I'd be happy to send a non-GD care package to anybody who is willing to open their ears...andy@gemut.com

I don't know about as good as it gets, but very good. Merle sang it with a little more honest emotion (IMHO) than Jerry, probably 'cuz he lived it. What Merle's version lacks of course is Jerome's geetar.
